Project: The Wednesday Charter Market

Every Wednesday morning, from February 2022-2023, I committed to drawing every stall of the St Albans Charter Market (45 minutes each). Surprisingly it took a year, but I now have within 5 moleskin, japanese sketchbooks, a wonderful visual memory of this special market.

Following on from the drawings: I started small oil painting studies of the Market (18x24cm) in March 2023, with the fabulous eclectic street food vans: Papapaella, Peddling Pizza, Weeping Chef, Yum-Yum, Pyro, The Momo-Hut, Comida Brasil, Rolling Burritos and Falafel & Hummus. From 2024-25, I moved further up the hill, into the main stalls, enlarging the boards to – 20x30cm. So far painted: Burgundy Mode, Chiltern Pets, Joanna of Crews Hill, Jantar, The Hat Stand and Anthony’s Picture Framing.
The next stage will be to paint large composite paintings on canvas, in oils.
