I had such an amazing time, as a competitor on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of The Year 2024. Heats were filmed in June and shown on Sky Arts in January 2024.

St Albans Market

St Albans is renowned for its two charter markets – Wednesday & Saturday and over 1,100 years old! I started drawing the Wednesday Market in February 2022. It has taken a whole year to draw every stall/van in the market, starting from The Cheesewheeler and finishing at The PapaPaella Van. Spending 45 minutes on each drawing and using a Japanese Moleskin sketchbook & 6B Faber-Castell pencil.

It’s been amazing hearing the individual stories of each person along the way. So many of the stall holders who worked with their grandparents, as young people, are now continuing the legacy.

From March 2023, I finally started painting onsite, small oil studies on board of each stall/van, building on my previous understanding-drawing-narrative of the market. Gradually, I will paint larger composite paintings on site and finally work on big canvasses in the Studio, from these studies and my own recollections.
